I describe my ongoing lyrics writing projects. Where I get my ideas, how I match my words with other people's music, which little helpers I use...

when you smile

This is going to be another example of setting music to text  - I know there is the expression "to set (text) to music", but what do you say when you work the other way 'round? Anyway, Markus had sent two songs using dummy text for the vocals, the first has become "I believe", the second has the provisional title "when you smile". If the title persists will have to be seen, I have no idea as for the lyrics as yet.

The first - rather obvious- thing for me to do when receiving a new piece of music is listening to it. I then make notes with regard to its structure and start counting syllables and marking stresses. By then I've heard the song four or five times. The structure for "when you smile is":
verse - verse - chorus - verse - chorus
Actually what I call "chorus" here doesn't sound much like a chorus, I just use the term lacking anything more fitting. Never mind.

The syllable count for the verses would be:
12, 10, 12, 8, 12, 10
with a quite straight intonation: - x - x - x - x - x - x  and so on.

What I call "chorus" consists of 4 lines that are repeated with
3, 5, 3, and 4-5 syllables, respectively. The intonation differs here:
x - x
- x - x -
x - x
x - x x (may also become: - x - x x)

Maybe I should mention that "x" stands for a stressed and "-" for an unstressed note.

Finding lyrics for this song shouldn't prove too difficult, provided I'll come up with an idea. I'm just listening to the music yet again to get a feel for its mood.
