I've changed the hook line into "I've torn down the bridge I crossed" instead of "I tore down the bridge I'd crossed". Though grammatically correct the first version did not convey what I've been trying to express: the bridge isn't there any longer and "I" regret having torn it down - that is reaching into the present, hence the tense must be perfect, not imperfect. A typical German mistake, I'm afraid. In colloquial conversation Germans use only two tenses, that is perfect for all things past, and present tense for present tense (obviously) as well as future, and also present continous - rather sloppy, isn't it?
