I found replacements for the first two lines since their meter would not quite ("not quite"!) match the meter of the respective lines in the other verses. With one exception all lines end on a stressed syllable, yet the first two lines ended in an unstressed syllable ("meadow", "follow"). It could have worked, but these are better:
the big boys all jumped o'er the ditch bordering the field
they talked me into tryin' as well, at last they made me yield
...
This version also goes better together with the last line: "... I had failed the test".
