meter, intonation, pronunciation

Although I'm reading and writing English all the time I hardly ever SPEAK English so my pronunciation - or rather the pronunciation I have in mind - can be quite wrong. Thus, although I'm quite good with regard to rhyme, meter and intonation, i.e. the flow or prosody of my lyrics, the meter may actually be off because I'm imagining a word with a wrong pronunciation. Fortunately, there are songwriting colleagues in the boards I'm active in who point out such mistakes.

This is a verse I had written:

I filled the roles provided
I tried to contribute [in my mind it was CONtriBUTE so it would have had the same meter as the fourth line]
I brought about some damage
I also did some good

That wouldn't have worked!

Now it reads:

I filled the roles provided
I did as much I could
I brought about some damage
I also did some good

Better :-)

The title of the song will be "I'm leaving". It's supposed to become part of a little song cycle that might serve as kind of folk or pop requiem (I'm actually imagining my own funeral here - that must be my age - although I have no intention of dying anytime soon).
