The idea to the subject has been with me since quite a while, yet somehow I never found a convincing clue. The song is supposed to deal with our endeavor to achieve something in our life that outlasts our personal existence. Yesterday I had an inspiration. I remembered an internet auction that never could be completed because my partner somehow had vanished. From one moment to the next there were no more activities from that guy. He had more auctions running, they all got stuck. Remembering this I envisioned a first verse for "leaving traces": someone dies and leaves all kinds of traces on the internet.
Soon I came up with the idea for a second verse that might deal with the traces the Romans left all over Europe, like the grooves their ox carts left on some very old roads.
A last verse might deal with having children that outlive and/or achievements that outlast you.
