You may have realized - or may have not - that I quite often write lyrics to match a tune somebody else has already finished composing. Not many lyricists are ready to work that way because it obviously can restrict your choice of words and lines considerably.

Since maintaining this blog I've always wished that I would be able to provide a description of this working process from the very beginning. But then, most of my partners actually sing their tunes using stupid lines and poor grammar. I'm quite happy if they make it sound English, so I can make out the intonation and use their singing as a kind of template for my own words. But I wouldn't want to publish this kind of "rough demos", not to an English public, anyway. It might come out a bit embarrasing

Alex II - the second guy with that name I'm working for - uses MIDI to represent the song line (Karsten did the same, but using a keyboard without touch dynamics made it rather tricky to identify the metrics). Anyway, here is the chorus of one of Alex' pieces:

117chorus (M3U file for Microsoft) or 117.chorus.mp3 (to download the sample if M3U doesn't work for you)

The song is meant for a female voice. It sounds pretty fresh and happy, so the line "dancing in the light" sort of sprang to my mind:

and I'm dancing through the light
'cause I love my la la la la life
and I will
truly make the night
shine just as bright

I am dancing through the light
I am dancing through the night
I am dancing through my life
that does shine
just as bright

If you listen carefully you will note that I left out a note in the line "shine just as bright". I found it difficult to sing anyway. Similarly the four notes in the second line are quite short and not easy to sing. You could try for yourself singing "ta ta ta ta ta" instead of "la la la la life", for example. You will see that strong consonants simply wouldn't work here. I think it's the first time that I use nonsense text like "la la la la" at all, but it actually fits quite well giving the song a happy, maybe naive feel.
