As you may have noticed, or may have not, I have marked all my stuff with a "creative commons license". I.e. I have attached a statement that I explicitly allow the use of my lyrics and tunes - under certain conditions.
The creative commons group has defined a set of rules which allow you to identify your licensing conditions very precisely. So you are not stuck with the alternative "public domain" versus "strictly commercial". My conditions read: you may use, alter, perform, and re-distribute my lyrics (or songs), as long you use them in a non-commercial manner, give me the credits, and attach the same conditions to your distributions. Although I use the American version of the CC license it fits quite well with the German/European right (yes, there are national adaptions of the CC rules).
To secure my own copyright I actually publish all my stuff in a timely manner, so as to make sure that my version was there first, if this should become an issue. And I attach a CC license to make sure there are no misunderstandings.
