Siddhartha

"Personal growth" was my subject - my secret agenda - when writing "Gilgamesh". The Gods made sure that Gilgamesh would learn to become a good king to his people the hard way. He had to conceive the fact of mortality before he could overcome his arrogance and ignorance. Gilgamesh is a historic figure as well as a mythic one.

Siddhartha was a prince who was raised in luxury and comfort. As a young man he intended to learn about the real world beyond the palaces. He discovered that there was suffering, pain, and death. He left home to experience and study what real life meant. Eventually he discovered that there was a way to lead a decent life independently of your social status, he became "Buddha", the enlightened.

The similarities of both stories are obvious, although Gilgamesh had to be pushed to come to his senses whereas Siddartha discovered his own personal path to spiritual growth. Originally, I had intended to merge these stories in one song about personal or spiritual growth. But both stories are too rich in detail to be squeezed into a short lyric. One of my next projects, therefore, will be "Siddartha". I will base the content of the song mainly on Hermann Hesse's novel, one of my all-time favorite books.
