I describe my ongoing lyrics writing projects. Where I get my ideas, how I match my words with other people's music, which little helpers I use...

dancing through the light II

First, here is the music to the verse of my current little project:

117verse (M3U for Microsoft Mediaplayer), 117verse.mp3 (mp3 if M3U doesn't work)

I came up with a text for the second line quite instantly: "I am blinking as the sun comes out". Maybe it sprang to my mind because it was early morning of a wonderful summer day when I began thinking about the verses. We'd just had breakfast on the balcony. I later change the line into "I'm awaking as the sun comes out". The second line that I put down was "enjoy the morning light", supposed to make the fifth line.

I always find it rather difficult to come up with any sensible solutions for line with just one, two or three syllables. Normally the text would be filled up in the manner:
in the morning
I'm awaking as the sun comes out

Next I checked if "morn" might be acceptable (Procul Harum - i.e. my hero Keith Reid - use it in "Grand Hotel": "One more toast to greet the morn"). Well, it is poetic - no harm in that - and maybe a bit old-fashioned, but it may be used:
in the morn
I'm awaking as the sun comes out

I actually like it better, and it's a perfect match into the bargain.

Here's the first verse:

in the morn
I'm awaking as the sun comes out
(to) greet the day

and from dawn
till night I'll sing aloud
(and) kiss
each sun ray

The words "to" and "and" might be left out. I'd prefer to leave them in, though, but then Alex or whoever is in charge of the melody (there are three musicians involved, I believe) has to decide on that.

Verse two:

in the eve
I'm going to light the party lights
(to) greet the night

stay or leave
or fly to unknown heights
(be) my
knight in white

I consulted my good old Penguin Rhyming Dictionary a lot to find matching words. "in the eve" was the first line that I had. I needed a counterpart to the "morning" or rather "morn", so the chorus would make sense ("dancing through the light - dancing through the night"). Although there actually are quite a few rhymes to match "eve" I found none that could possibly make sense. Okay, I thought to myself, why not introduce another person into the song. The person eventually became the "knight in white" when I checked rhymes for "light", and "night", finding "height" as well as "white" and "knight", discarding "kite" ("hight as a kite" that Aerosmith use somewhere, for example, would be too profane here). Nice inner rhyme, isn't it?
