I describe my ongoing lyrics writing projects. Where I get my ideas, how I match my words with other people's music, which little helpers I use...
I'm not writing (for) country music. But Craig uses my lyrics every now and then, casting them into country tunes. To make them fit he often adjusts their phrasing, making them more conversational (and American). Now, he had "cut and run" evaluated by some Nashville songwriters' association. Following their suggestions I rewrote "cut and run":
life's not a walk in the park
some days are sunny, some are dark
some things are easy, some are hard
sometimes you win, sometimes you lose [Craig omits this line; normally even measures have an even number of lines]
sometimes life's like a bad hand of cards [rephrased]
cut and run - that's your reaction
pullin' different ways we get no traction [rephrased]
there are times when life's not fun [replaced]
love's "give and take", not "cut and run" [replaced]
sometimes to win you got to give up [replaced]
to make the difference to our love [adapted]
we were at odds, got cross somehow [rephrased]
we need not solve things here and now
we'll find a way out anyhow
if we try hard enough, you see [replaced, but see my note above: Craig may only use four lines]
somehow things will straighten out [moved]
CHORUS
I still love you, though I'm angry
can't you try to feel the same
we could agree to disagree
so no one has to take the blame
CHORUS
sometimes to win you got to give up
to make the difference to our love
