I describe my ongoing lyrics writing projects. Where I get my ideas, how I match my words with other people's music, which little helpers I use...
8B was my working title. "8" because of the number of the effect I use for the guitar on my Digitech effect processor that is supposed to match AC/DC's "Hells Bells". "B" because it's the second riff I have recorded with that particular sound recently. The riff is very, very simple indeed (and much fun to play).
After finishing the accompaniment over the weekend I had to find words for the song. Due to its uncommon structure I could not use any of the lyrics I had written before. The structure goes: A B A C A C. "B" could be considered a bridge if it came not so early. "A" goes with the riff. I later made "C" the repeated part, although "A" would come closer to an ordinary chorus...
First I estimated how many syllables I might need. These were my first notes:
A: 4 3 (four times)
B: 4 (six times)
C: 5-6 (five times) + 2
Next I put down a few lines that might go together with the sentiment of the tune (actually there was no tune yet, only the accompaniment, but you know what I mean): "you use to make me look the fool", "first you arouse my fantasy - next teasing out my jealousy".
The first part I completed was part C. I searched RhymeZone for viable rhymes. There I actually found "we'll" as a rhyme for "steel", imagine! And I used that! I liked that part so much that I decided to repeat it verbatim instead of finding different words for its second occurence. I then added lines to the "A" parts that might fit. Part "B" came last.
With the exception of the last two words of part "C" I had the lyrics completed within 15 minutes. The last two lines first went "give us a chance so that we'll / prosper and bloom". "prosper and bloom" sounded so corny and didn't fit too well anyway! While I was swimming and shopping I came up with yet another 'eel'-rhyme: "come real", so part "C" now would end "give us a chance so that we'll / come real". Coming home I was ready to record the vocals.
These are the complete lyrics:
you use to make
me look the fool
I play the clown
courting you
first you arouse
my fantasy
next teasing out
my jealousy
I can't get you
_ off my mind
I find it hard
_ to unwind
why are you
so unkind
to me
you share your time
with other guys
tryin' to make me
wince and cry
first you arouse
my fantasy
next teasing out
my jealousy
you act hard as steel
why not trust your feel
let's just make it a deal
with witness and seal
give us a chance so that we'll
come real
you turn me on
you kiss me high
then you jump up
to shout "Good Bye"
first you arouse
my fantasy
next teasing out
my jealousy
you act hard as steel
why not trust your feel
let's just make it a deal
with witness and seal
give us a chance so that we'll
come real
The underscores in part "B" indicate 'missing' notes, i.e. a rest of one note. The recording is on SoundClick
